Nails done, Hair done, everything big and WELDING

The past four years of life I had been splurging on every type of fashion magazine which you could possibly imagine. Name it Allure, Cosmo, Glamour, etc. Hair cutting magazines you name it. That’s the fun part about my work you always need to update on what is “in”. I mastered skills on what type of lipstick suit’s a person better and which tones to stay away from. For me a typical professional look is wearing all black, high heels or wedges, perfected hair, make-up, and acrylic nails. I find pleasure in looking sharp.

However, the beginning of 2011 has been quite different and perhaps the year which will change my direction in life. And it all begins like this…Last week was my first day of engineering school. Yes, I am a math geek and would much rather do millions of math problems that millions of essays. Well, I must admit for the past months writing has actually been quite enjoyable. My first day of engineering school here I go all dressed up. Here is my description of dressed up: I was wearing my favorite brown leather jacket, dangling earrings, a scarf, make-up and hair all done up, and I must mention the famous scrunched up brown boots, and my favorite Kathy Van Zeeland purse. Okay I hope you get the picture now. Furthermore, I was also 15 minutes late(eekkkkk! One of my pet peeves!) This was all on my very first day. You see, at the engineering facility at Cal Baptist no one can get in unless you have your ID cars. Similar to a hotel you swipe the card in order to get into your room and if you loose your room card you may not get in your room. Of course, being a transfer student my ID was not quite activated yet. I made it to class finally 15 minutes late and the only chair available happened to be the very front one. Since there is no other option I take it. I soon begin to realize I am outnumbered by fifty boys starring in confusion wondering if I was actually in the correct classroom/building. It truly reminded me of the film Legally Blonde when Reese Witherspoon walks into the law school and everyone stares confused. Except, I am now a brunette. Further into the day, I make it to lab escorted by my kind professor because of course I did not know where it was at. As soon as it begins, we begin training on all these safety rules and I am introduced to all these different safety goggles and masks which are for many different types of welding. Then my professor makes the remark, “by the time you guys finish the engineer program you guys will become professional welders.” And some of his safety rules for the labs involve no loose clothing, opened toed shoes, earrings, and hair must be pulled out of the face. My question for Tuesday remains, what about my acrylic nails? Anyhow, at the end of the day I found out that there are two other girls in my class who are much more different than me. However, every person which I encountered was genuinely kind.

My challenge begins and I am content to say that an electric feeling of excitement arises. Which is ironic because five years ago an engineer major or welding would have never crossed my mind. My hope is to in the future aid underdeveloped nations and to aid our communities. I am pleased to say the first week actually went quite well and I found all my subjects to be quite interesting. Along with all the many exciting projects we will be working on, one thing I discovered and learned is that engineering is a personification of life. In engineering there are no short cuts at all otherwise your design will be quite off and destruction may arise. It is essential to have a strong foundation and clearly follow step by step instructions paying close attention to the rules taking no short cuts or your project is pretty much doomed. In life I have come to discover that there are not short cuts to be taken otherwise, there are serious consequences to be paid. If there is no strong foundation in your life of who you truly are and what you believe in, you discover that your world begins to be chatter. Therefore, failing sooner allows us to succeed sooner.

To all my lovely clients thank you for being so amazing of working with my schedule. I will still be doing hair in the evenings and Saturdays weddings. In two weeks Arleth and I will be doing our first photoshoot of 2011 with Brittany and Matt. I can hardly wait to post the pictures J Stay tuned…
